The conference will be housed in the new University of Waterloo School of Architecture and surrounding historic buildings in Cambridge, Ontario. The site is one hour west of downtown Toronto, half an hour from Pearson International Airport and convenient to highway access from Buffalo and Detroit. The first phase of AIA and ACADIA events and the preceding SmartGeometry and Education Summit events will all be held in Cambridge. On Saturday afternoon and evening, bus transport will bring delegates to the historic Victorian campus of the University of Toronto for final events.
The urban landscape of the community of Cambridge is one of the most beautiful in Ontario. The Grand River, a designated Heritage river which runs through the city, is lined by a stock of Victorian and early-twentieth century limestone and brick buildings. The Waterloo School of Architecture at Cambridge is housed within a newly renovated 1920s textile factory that directly overlooks the river. It is surrounded by a circle of historic churches and public buildings. Central Presbyterian Church, an ornate Victorian Gothic complex immediately beside the school, will house the main audience hall for the conference. A second auditorium, as well as dining rooms and exhibition halls will be located on the ground floor of the Architecture school. Student installations and industrial exhibitions will surround the conference and extend out into the grounds of the school.
Saturday events at the University of Toronto will take place in the heart of the city within walking distance of the financial core. Guided tours of new architecture within the city of Toronto and advanced fabrication facilities will supplement the conference programme. Tours will include outstanding examples of contemporary architecture including Santiago Calatrava's BCE Place, Mies' Toronto Dominion Centre, and Revell's New City Hall.
